Halloween 2014 my friend Penny and I decided to dress up as 'the calm before the storm'. Her costume was of a setting sun, and mine was a raincloud.
Since the year prior I used the LED lights from my design school to create a Jellyfish costume, I kind of wanted to do something else luminescent, and so we bought clear umbrellas so that we could line the inner surfaces with battery operated LED lights (mine a cold white, hers, warm) to make the clouds 'glow'. We used pillow stuffing, which I sewed into my umbrella, not wanting to use a hot glue gun on clear plastic. And for the rain, I alternated clear and black tubular beads to create the illusion of rain. The black beads blended perfectly with darker backgrounds, and the clear ones captured the light as rain would.
For the sun of her costume, Penny used a yellow lantern, which also lit up!
If you decide to try this for yourselves, be warned, these umbrellas can get extremely heavy!
