NOVELS

I dabbled in novel writing from 2014-2017. I often say that had I known how much work writing a novel would be, I would have never attempted it in the first place. But in truth, no matter how demanding, and at times, isolating the process can be, I keep coming back to it because it's far too strong a compulsion for me to overcome. There is a certain thrill that comes with creating something out of seemingly nothing. And if you're lucky enough to get to share it with others -- to incite in them what you felt when tapping on your keyboard -- then it has all been worth it.

Neve Knightly lives in an ordinary world. Where déjà vu is nothing more than a mind-trick. Where premonitions are dismissed as mere coincidence. Where no one thinks twice about the glitches in their reality.

Neve Knightly is living a lie.

When her nightmare of a tragic incident comes true, the glossy enamel shatters. Through the cracks, she catches a glimpse of the truth slithering just beneath the surface. And so, she becomes consumed with deciphering the enigma that’s been haunting her since childhood. But her quest becomes deeply entangled with the last two people on earth she could have ever imagined: the former love of her life, Dylan, who mysteriously vanished three years ago, and his estranged best friend, Romer, who seems to be guarding a secret of his own.

Romance, redemption, and revenge plummet as priorities as their lives become riddled with peculiar happenings lying just outside the realm of science. They find themselves venturing down a perilous path, and in search for salvation, emerge at the brink of unveiling the best kept secret in human history.

What happened three years ago?

Dylan Sterling is an anomaly who dreams of events before they happen. But over the years, this peculiar gift has transformed into a curse. A dark curse in the form of a strange man who haunts him. Hunts him. Kills him.

But unlike other people, even once Dylan has awakened from a nightmare, the agony of torture clings to his skin. The horror of his own brutal murder continues to resonate with him. Pain, it seems, has long become the status quo. That is until a recurring nightmare reveals a clue that might help him unveil the truth of his ‘condition’.

The race against time has begun, and with each passing day, the boundaries between dream and reality are becoming more and more muddled. And unless he can solve this mystery, he’ll stand to lose even more than he thought possible.

Q|A

How do you pronounce Neve's name?
It is pronounced NEHV, like actress Neve Campbell's name. Névé is granular snow accumulated on high mountains and subsequently compacted into glacial ice, which I found beautifully resonant with Neve's 'abilities'.

How many installments are there for The Fray Theory?
The Fray Theory is a very complex story, which needs to be told in a serial manner. It is too soon to tell how the story and character arcs will manifest.

Who did the cover art?
I did :). Though intimidating at first, I just couldn't bring myself to outsource it. I did the character art individually then coalesced them for the cover.

How did you come up with The Fray Theory?
The theories within the novel were sparked by a lovely conversation my best friend and I were having one late summer night. We talked endlessly about serendipity, coincidence, intuition, and destiny, and I was suddenly struck by an idea. It took months to refine the theories themselves, but once I wrung out the discrepancies, it was time to get down to business and come up with characters and plot (which took an additional nine or so months).

Why does Neve Knightly look a lot like you?

I initially modeled Neve's character after myself  in an attempt to make her fears, desires and emotions more organic. After she was fully fleshed out, however, it was very hard to put a different face to her, so I kept it :).

Who is your favorite character?
Ooh, tough one! But if I had to choose, I'd have to say Marcus Holt ;D.

Did you base The Fray Theory on your own life?
The Fray Theory is entirely fictional, but I have sprinkled the narrative with homages to people, places, and experiences that have meant something to me.

How long did it take to write the book?
At first I thought it was a three-month project at best (oh the naivete!). I realized soon thereafter that there is no way to tell the full story as richly as I hope without breaking it into three novels. Structuring plot (pacing and incorporation of major incidents, creating character profiles, backstory, etc.) took about a year. And now editing and refining has taken close to half a year.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
If you had told me a year and a half ago that I would ever even consider writing a book, I would've laughed! It was one of those things that fell into my lap, and I just couldn't bring myself to push it off. It soon became evident that writing a fictional novel is very different from writing excruciatingly long research papers, so I had to completely revamp my writing style from cold and quantitative, to warm and evocative. It was a lot to learn in such a short period of time, but it has been incredibly rewarding!

AUTHOR
INTERVIEWS

I've recently had the pleasure of answering questions about The Fray Theory - Resonance on Random Acts of Books blog. Be sure to check it out here!

REVIEWS

"[Keramati's] prose is rich in figurative language, and her similes are often pitch-perfect. A promising start to a planned paranormal trilogy." - Kirkus Reviews

"It's rare that a novel hooks me from the get-go and draws me in as completely and unapologetically as The Fray Theory: Resonance did! I love when a book consumes me so utterly that it becomes my whole world just as much as it is the characters. I absolutely love the concept behind this story - the fray theory itself. It's a delicious idea and I'm excited to see what'll happen to the trio after this first book. I'm not ready to give up this world, or these characters, yet!" - Carmen-Shea Hepburn, author of Amanzimtoti: The Ridge

"Nelou Keramati sweeps you into her realm. And what a realm it is!" - O.M. Wills, author

"The paranormal aspects of the book are very thrilling and have been very convincingly explained. The simplicity of the story is its strength as it helps the reader with continuous engagement and a feeling as though it’s happening to the people the reader already knows." - Pawan Mishra, author of Coinman

"The “Fray Theory” itself is so complex, but it’s explained in a very clear and understandable way. I’m hopelessly in love with this book. I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone because it’s just that good." - Marlo U, Blogger

"I want this to become a movie." - Marshal Tan, Blogger at TheBookishHowler

"This was probably one of the best Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy novels I have ever read. The character development was beautifully written and well thought out." - Bridget Froemming, Blogger

"This book was action packed and full of great scenes. The plot was phenomenal." - Logan Ashley LeDuc, Blogger

"Nelou is an absolute genius when it comes to imagery. She has a way of wording things that makes you feel like you are right there with the characters. Absolutely beautiful writing!" - Jess

"This is a fantastic debut novel with an intriguing and other worldly premise. I expected there to be a lot of science in this novel and I was not disappointed. I love science (Hawking is my idol)." - Sandi

"The style of writing Nelou used invokes a fugue like state for readers. It was unsettling in the best possible way, and made me want to read faster to find out what would happen." - Amoreena

"Nelou Keramati is a true author who brings her characters alive on paper. I couldn't even tell you how many times I got chills while reading this. I was floored, speechless, in a dreamlike state the whole time!" - Alyson

"The CONCEPT of this novel, IT WAS PHENOMENAL. The author has a degree in Psychology so the way she explained it was PERFECT. It was quite mind boggling to think such a different and UNIQUE concept! I actually got goosebumps at some points because it felt like I was watching a movie." - Frances

"This is one book that is going to be deservedly remembered. At least by me. Beautiful narration. Written with such words that it will leave you wordless and speechless and thoughtless and breatheless..." - Maida

"The writing style was elegant and seamless, and it flowed in a way that reminded me of Maggie Stiefvater, with expert use of rhetoric devices and unexpected turning of phrases. The way Keramati created imagery was astounding–I could see, hear, smell, and feel the atmosphere she created with her words." - Lauren

"A+ FOR EVERYTHING. 10 out of 5 stars." - Anjeline

"Extremely fast-paced and unlike anything I had ever read before. There are no clichés. There isn’t insta-love. Neve is one of the most realistic characters that I have ever read about. Never a dull moment. It throws you directly into the action in the first chapter and it keeps it going until the last page. Look no further here is your 2016 debut author." - Amy

"What a book! The fray theory - Resonance is one of those books that is so fast paced that it manages to make you block out everything around you because you are so enthralled with the story! And when I think the plot is going to go one way it goes the complete opposite and manages to be ten times better that I thought!" - Laura

"This book had me at the edge of my seat the whole time!" - Angela

"I recommend this book to readers that enjoy intelligent and very well written fiction." - Ali

"You've probably never read anything like this. Neve didn't follow the typical female character mold we see in so many books these days. The writing was absolutely beautiful. It was sophisticated yet easy to understand. I know the author says she never thought she'd become a writer but she was obviously destined to be one. I absolutely, positively LOVED this novel and I can't wait for the next book!" - Sushi

"The writer succeeds at mastering a suspenseful story into a truly superb book." - Atul

"What a smart, addicting, and well written debut! The premise of the book is fascinating. The plot is intricate. Each chapter ending had me clutching my kindle wanting to know what would happen next and if everyone would be ok. What made this book so amazing to me were the characters. They were wonderfully complex. I wish I had this author's way with words so I could write the review that this book deserves. This book has something for everyone. Beautiful, quotable parts, suspense, action, humor, and romance. I highly recommend it and I can't wait for book #2!" - Kelli

"The Fray Theory really stood out from a lot of the fiction I have read this year. I found that its plot was unique and memorable, as it has not been explored yet in other popular fiction. The protagonist behaves as a real person would, and doesn't find herself in ridiculous situations for the sake of creating a compelling story; the theme of the book is sufficient for this. I couldn't believe that this was a debut novel for Nelou Keramati. The theory that the book is based on is well thought-out and helps create suspense and a need to finish the book ASAP! I honestly can't wait until the trilogy is complete so I can see where this story goes!" - Evelyn

"The Fray Theory kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end. It's a real page turner. I can’t wait to read anything else by Nelou." - Laura

"She actually made me laugh out loud." - Michaela

"I simply love this story. The beginning certainly grabbed my attention. Like a movie that shows you this really intense scene and then takes you back to before it starts. Yet is so intriguing that you're not left wondering when that scene is going to reappear, it just shows up and your like wow. This is definitely a new favorite of mine. Now the hard part... Waiting for book 2!" - L.M.

"Every moment in this book has you on your toes. It is a very very fast paced book." - Elizabeth

"I was first hooked on the prologue. Cliff hanger much? And in the very beginning of the book?! That's asking a lot from an author, but Nelou Keramati managed to do it. I really liked the way the author crafted the characters. Because each of them had their own inner problems, it almost felt as if they were real." - Sasha

"I absolutely adore the author's way of writing!" - Hanna

"The concept is refreshingly unique. Keramati structures her narrative lyrically. There are portions that almost read like poetry, sentences that are stunningly beautiful all on their own, even without the context of the story. The style of writing really helps to get the reader immersed into the story. It was different than almost anything I've read. With so many ideas being recycled, it's exciting to come across a story that's doing a damn good job of blazing its own path." - Sam

"The breakthrough in this book was phenomenal for me, the explanation about it, made me question the existence of my reality. I believe the science in this." - Rave
